All about my satin thread (and a little about acrylic cord)

I regularly receive questions about the satin thread that I sell. That's why I'd like to tell you more about it in this blog.

What types of satin thread do I sell?

I sell two variants:

  • Satin thread of 1.5 mm

  • 2mm satin thread

It 1.5mm satin thread has been part of my range since the beginning. When I was still making baby items myself, I always worked with them. All colors have been tested on my behalf for chemical composition and... certified.
I think this is a really nice thread to work with. The only disadvantage: there are not that many colors available.

That's why I have a number of colors in 2025 satin thread of 2 mm added. Please note: this thread is not tested. So I don't recommend it for baby items.
But for things like keychains it's perfect. And you have just a few more colors to vary with!

What about the rules for pacifier cords?

The most frequently asked question I get is: “Can you use 1.5 mm satin thread for pacifier cords?”

The official guidelines state that the cord at least 2 mm thick must be. Yet there are already many pacifier cords with my 1.5 mm thread that have been tested and approved without any problems.

The photo below shows why this is so:
On the left you see my 1.5 mm wire, on the right a 2 mm wire. Visually there is little difference. The thicker thread is woven a little looser, but contains just as many fibers. That's why it is not necessarily stronger – and you can even get your strokes in faster.

Does the wire actually fit through the beads?

Of course!
The holes in the silicone beads are 2 mm. You would think that only one wire can go through that, but that is not so bad. In the photo below you see a bead with four wires satin thread – and that was surprisingly easy.

Silicone is flexible, so you can thread it through a bead several times, knot it securely and finish it neatly.

And what exactly is acrylic cord?

I have also been selling since 2024 acrylic cord. This looks a bit like paracord and is becoming increasingly popular for pacifier cords. It consists of a white core surrounded by a woven outer layer.

Acrylic cord is slightly thicker than satin thread, which sometimes makes it a bit more difficult to work with. Yet you can see in the photo below that there is two strands of acrylic cord fit through a bead.

The biggest stumbling block: it is too thick for the basting needles that I sell. But there is a simple solution for that:

➡️ Use a folded piece of iron wire as a needle.
Carefully insert the ends through the bead, pull the wire through, and you're done!

In summary:

✔️ 1.5mm satin thread: certified, suitable for baby items.
✔️ 2mm satin thread: more colours, but not tested – perfect for key rings.
✔️ Acrylic cord: tough and sturdy, but slightly more difficult to process.

Do you make baby items?
Then choose the 1.5 mm satin thread. Then you can be sure that it is safe - and that is nice if it regularly disappears into your mouth. 😊
