On this page you can read more about what you need to get started with making pacifier cords and biting items.

Basic supplies

  • Satin wire. This thread is by far the most suitable, because it is sturdy and hardly stretches.
  • Beads. Certain beads are suitable or not for each type of article. Below I will tell something more about that.
  • A closure, pacifier or confirmation ring, depending on the article you want to make.
  • A needle. Preferably use a needle with a large eye and blunt point for stringing. (Also for sale via this website) This makes the thread easily fits through the needle, and you cannot damage the silicones with the tip of the needle.
  • A pair of pliers. For articles where the wire has to be strung several times through the same bead, you need a pair of pliers. This allows you to keep a grip on the needle and put strength.
  • Do you want to work with the so -called 'fire method'? Then a reversing needle is handy, and you can order silicone thimble so that you don't burn your fingers if you melt the satin wire together.

Which bead do you use for what?
(And how much wire do you need?)

Biting:

With 12-14 beads of 15 mm you can make a nice tight ring. When you choose (variety) with other sizes and shapes you sometimes need more beads. Especially if the other beads are angular you need a larger ring to ensure that there is no thread between the beads. Do not use beads that are smaller than approximately 15 mm in diameter. The intermediate slices are an exception to this. For example, they make it easier for you to string a longer name to a teeth, while it can still be bent around.
Use at least a meter of satin wire to make a teeth. It is better to string on a little too much wire than to be tight, because the latter does not work well. Because you string through the same bead several times during a teeth, you cannot do this without a string.
Note: Do not use beads with thin pieces or protrusions that could be bitten from the bead! Also do not use beads that could be deformed too much when bending and tightening of the ring and could be cut broken by the satin wire.

Sear cord:

I always make a pacifier cord with beads of at least 14/15 mm diameter. Beads larger than 19 mm is not that suitable for a pacifier. That makes it too heavy and too coarse. I generally use 9-12 beads for a teat cord. With more beads, the cord soon becomes too long. Always think of safety! (A pacifier cord may include a loop, without a clip, a maximum of 22 cm long. It depends on the chosen beads, how many beads you can put on this, and keep in mind that the cord will be used when determining the length stretch!).
For a teat cord you need at least one meter of satin wire, but to be sure it is best to order 2 meters. Just like with a teething, it works best if you have a good piece of wire when knotting. To make a teat cord you need a thread and a pair of pliers, because you have to string the wire several times through the same bead. If you use the fire method, you need less wire. I don't use this method myself.
Use safe shapes for a teat cord. Preferably only silicone, no beads with thin pieces or protrusions, but compact shapes that are as close as possible to a round shape. My exclusive beads such as the bear, the bird and the owl, I deliberately designed in this way, so that they are safe for use in a teat cord, but hexagons can also be used for a teat cord. Also do not add other accessories such as rings. This gives a teat cord as a toy!

Key ring:

Key chains can be made with key ring rods (then you only have to slide beads on the bar), or with satin wire and a musketon hook or key ring. The advantage of working with satin wire is that you can decide for yourself how long you make the key ring.
If you use a key ring rod, you must have the beads exactly appropriate, and that sometimes requires puzzle work. It can help to get ideas on the internet, because more and more key chains are being made with silicone beads. I will add more examples to this website in the coming period, and in the meantime you can always ask me if the combination that you have in mind fits.

Pen:

Making a pen works just like making a key ring with key ring rod: you just have to slide the beads on it. Here too, the challenge is to get the beads exactly appropriate. Fortunately, combinations that fit on the pens also fit on the key ring rods. (Only on the pencils is a little more space).
The pens will also come on the website, and in the meantime you can always ask if the combination that you have in mind.

Children's necklace:

Child chains are intended for children from 3 years. This means that there is a (almost) complete teeth with sharp teeth. Smaller beads than 15 mm are therefore not suitable for this. Exceptions are chains for children who do not really bite on a chain, but wear the chain as an accessory. Silicone children's chains are also great for this. Among other things because of the safety closure that will release as soon as the child continues to crochet with the chain. Order 1 meter satin wire for a children's chain.
Do you make a chain for a child who bites the beads? Then check for damage prior to each use.
For sturdy bijters I recommend not using angular beads. The edges quickly invite 'nibble'.

Food chain:

A food chain is primarily intended to play with during feeding, and for satisfying the bite need when the first teeth come through. All beads are in principle suitable for this.
If you start making knots between the beads, order 2 meters of satin wire for a chain. If you do not tie between the beads, 85 centimeters is a usual length for a full chain, and you therefore have enough 1 meter.
You always have a food chain around your own neck, and you should never give it to a child as a toy. A chain is far too long for that. With the chain around your own neck you are constantly monitoring your child.

Note: a teeth is seen as toys. If you want to sell it, they must also be tested as such.

At Speenkorden you must ensure that you meet the guidelines. Do you want to sell teat cords and be completely sure of safety? Have it tested.

Necklaces are not toys !! Pay attention to chains (always 3+!) Always pay attention to any damage.
