Pacifier chains
A pacifier clip seems like a simple product, but because it is used so close to a baby, safety is extra important.
On this page you can read what exactly a pacifier cord is, what rules apply to it and what you as a maker or user must take into account. Not technical, but clear.
What is a pacifier clip?
A pacifier clip is one commodity that ensures that a pacifier does not fall on the floor or get lost.
A pacifier clip is no toys.
That distinction is precisely important, because different rules apply to pacifier cords than to toys.
Safety guidelines for pacifier cords
A specific safety standard applies to pacifier cords in Europe: EN 12586.
This standard has been specially drawn up for pacifier cords (also called soother holders mentioned).
The directive covers, among other things:
- Maximum length
- Construction
- Confirmation
- Materials used
The aim is to minimize risks such as choking or loose parts as much as possible.
Length and dimensions
A pacifier clip is allowed without clip be a maximum of 22 cm long.
It is important to take into account the fact that a pacifier cord can stretch slightly during use.
This means that:
- Not every name or combination is suitable for a pacifier clip
- Simplicity is often safer
In addition, make sure that:
- There is nowhere for a baby to become trapped
- Fingers, hands or arms cannot get stuck
Shape and material
With pacifier cords it is wise to choose:
- Compact, sturdy shapes
- Preferably silicone beads without protrusions
Beads with thin parts or sharp edges entail additional risks.
Many angular beads next to each other can also cause a pacifier cord to bend less well and cause the wire to become visible.
Adding extra accessories, such as loose rings, is not recommended. As a result, a pacifier clip can be seen as a toy, which entails different requirements.
Attachment and clip
The pacifier clip is an essential part of the pacifier cord.
A good pacifier clip:
- Remains firmly attached
- Has ventilation holes
- It is intended to be attached to clothing, not to be bitten
Always attach a pacifier clip in such a way that the clip is not bitten directly.
Testing: when and when not?
Testing pacifier cords is not legally required, but in practice it is highly recommended — especially if you want to sell pacifier cords.
In recent years there have been several recalls of pacifier cords that upon further investigation turned out to be unsafe. Testing provides certainty about:
- Your mounting method
- The construction of the cord
If you use materials from my webshop, the materials used are: loose parts already assessed according to the applicable guidelines. For it end product the responsibility always remains with the maker.
Use and control
A safely made pacifier cord also requires sensible use.
- Always use a pacifier clip under supervision
- Give a pacifier clip not to bed
- Check regularly for wear or damage
- If in doubt, do not use the pacifier cord anymore
If the pacifier cord is damaged, it must be taken out of use immediately.
In summary
- A pacifier clip is no toys
- Maximum length (without clip): 22 cm
- Choose safe, compact shapes
- Limit extra parts
- Testing is not mandatory, but it is wise
- The maker remains responsible for the end product
