Food chains and safety

A feeding chain is worn by an adult while feeding, and is intended to hold a baby's attention and soothe the need for biting.

Because a feeding chain is often grabbed and put in the mouth, it is important to be clear about this use and safety.

On this page you can read what a feeding chain is and is not, and what you should take into account when making and using it.

What is a food chain?

A food chain is not a toy for a child.

It is an accessory worn by an adult, for example while breastfeeding or bottle feeding.

The baby plays with the chain while it is being worn, under adult supervision.

That distinction is important because different rules apply to toys than to accessories worn by adults.

Use and supervision

A food chain:

  • Always worn by one adult
  • Used alone under supervision
  • Mag never loose be given to a baby or child

The length of a feeding chain makes it unsuitable for a child to use independently. Therefore, also provide a food chain not to bed.

Shape and material

In principle, many shapes and materials can be used for food chains, as long as safety and use are taken into account.

It is wise to:

  • Use sturdy, compact beads
  • Avoid sharp edges and thin protrusions
  • Keep designs clear and not too heavy

Here too, simplicity is often safer.

More information about materials can be found on the page Materials.

Construction

The way a feeding chain is strung or knotted partly determines its safety.

A carefully crafted feeding chain:

  • Is solidly constructed
  • Do not release beads during normal use
  • Continues to function well with regular handling

Check a feeding chain regularly for wear or damage and, if in doubt, discontinue use.

Testing and sales

Because a food chain is not intended as a toy for the child, it usually does not fall under the toy rules.

That does not alter the fact that:

  • The safety of the design remains important
  • Clear usage instructions are essential
  • The distinction between adult and child use must be clear

If you are making food chains to sell, make sure that:

  • The use is clearly explained
  • The necklace is not presented as a toy
  • Parents know that supervision is always necessary

In summary

  • A food chain is no toys
  • Always worn by an adult
  • Never give loose to a baby or child
  • Use only under supervision
  • Check regularly for damage
  • The maker remains responsible for the end product
