When I started Hugs & Things in 2013, I made everything in bright rainbow colors. I filled colorful stalls at markets and fairs, and my children always wore brightly colored clothes.

But over the years, fashion changed. Gray tones and natural colors were the new trend, and my range changed along with it, because there was a lot of demand for beads in neutral colors.

Make no mistake: I love greyed, soft colours, but I still want to write a small plea for the bright colours.

Bright colors are attractive to babies for several reasons. This has to do with the development of their eyesight and how they process stimuli.

Development of vision

Newborn babies do not yet see clearly. They mainly see in shades of gray and can distinguish contrasts best.

Babies are naturally attracted to strong contrasts (such as black and white or brightly colored objects on a neutral background) because they are easier to perceive.

From about 2 to 3 months, babies start to distinguish colors, but they mainly see primary colors well (red, blue, yellow). Bright colors are most noticeable at this stage.

Cognitive stimulation

Bright colors and visual stimuli help babies' brains develop. They invite you to look, grab and discover — all important for motor and cognitive development.

Babies react instinctively to stimuli that attract their attention. Bright colors stand out clearly from the environment, which makes them more interesting than pastel shades or muted colors.

It is therefore very good, especially for young children, to offer toys in bright colors. For a pacifier clip or teething ring, think outside the standard calm colors (no matter how beautifully decorative they are).

Would you like it if I started selling more bright colors of certain items or bead shapes? Then you can always contact me so that I can look at the possibilities.

I am very curious about your colorful creations!

Love, Marit
